I appreciate having my brain functioning again

On the 5th day of treatment I picked up a book I needed to return to a friend called “Break the Mold”. Surprisingly I was able to read it from front cover to back cover. It took me 3 hours to read and I was thrilled because I haven’t been able to successfully concentrate on anything for the last 6 years. Reading had been my favorite pastime so it was pure joy to have my mind functioning again and being able to focus on anything for an extended period of time.

I was a caregiver for 6 years and several of the homes I worked in had mold. I had severe brain damage and lost long and short term memory and the ability to speak for a while.

My life had slowed down to living each day in survival mode. Not having normal brain function anymore was depressing and even worse not having supportive friends understand what I was going through was equally as sad. Mold poisoning is an interesting illness because a person can look normal on the outside but feel horrible in the inside. Even when I honestly told my friends I have mold poisoning symptoms and my brain is not functioning like it use to, they would joke about having memory problems as well. Because I was not joking and they couldn’t understand what I was going through I became more of a recluse.

I knew I didn’t have Alzheimer’s or Dementia because those were some of the clients I cared for. When there’s an obvious misconnect from trying to retrieve words or even a thought from my brain and then what pops out of my mouth has nothing to do with what I was thinking it’s a rude awakening that I might never again be able to express myself in the way I intend to.
